Footwear For Big Toe Joint Pain?

If you suffer from pain and/or arthritic changes in your big toe joint, you’re likely familiar with the limited mobility that can come with it. This condition can make walking and running uncomfortable and sometimes impossible, for most of us we need to keep active and mobile to enjoy the benefits that come with it. During this blog we discuss types of footwear for big toe joint pain that might help you keep moving and reduce your discomfort.

Why Stiffer Rocker Soles Might Be The Answer!

Over the past few years trainers technology has changed with the introduction of a more aggressive rocker in the sole. HOKA are a brand that have lead the change and lots of other brands have started to move in a similar direction. We have also seen the introduction of carbon and nylon plated super shoes which have also increased the rocker profile of training shoes. This stiff rocker sole can also seen in walking and casual footwear.

Why Do Stiff Rocker Soles Help?

So when we think about pain joints we immediately try and reduce acute stress (immobilise), let symptoms settle and then look to treat and/or manage the presenting complaint. The same concept applies when dealing with a painful big toe, however unlike other joints it is very difficult to immobilise the big toe joint. It can be done with insoles but these will inevitably take up a lot of space inside footwear and can be impractical.

A stiff rocker sole in footwear can be a very practical way to help immobilise and facilitate forward motion without putting the joint under stress. If you are suffering with arthritic change (hallux limitus or rigidus) this might need to be a permanent change in how you manage your footwear.

So What Is Good Footwear For Big Toe Joint Pain?

There are lots of choice when it comes to footwear but here are a few of the favourites that the podiatrists will often recommend:

HOKA Bondi 8

This shoe has a wide, stable base with an aggressive rocker sole and is a great shoe choice for walking and running.

Saucony Axon 3

This shoe offers an aggressive forefoot rocker but at a lower price point. A good neutral shoe for runners.

Fitflop F-mode

A more casual range of footwear and a firm favourite with our female patients.

North Face Vectiv Walking Shoes/Boots

A great range that can be used for everyday and those looking for a lightweight walking shoe/boot.
