At ACE we utilise shockwave therapy for treating chronic lower limb injuries. Common conditions treated with this are plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis. We consider this treatment after the condition has been present for more than 4 months.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave Therapy is the application of Shock Waves in medicine.

Rather than resorting to surgery or injections, this treatment has been clinically shown to trigger metabolic responses, kickstarting the healing process.
By initiating a healing phase and activating enzymes that help alleviate pain, shockwave therapy boasts a high success rate in managing these stubborn, often long-standing, and painful injuries.
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), the method involving shock waves, has strong evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating plantar fasciitis and various tendon conditions, such as Achilles, hamstring, patellar, gluteal, and tennis elbow tendinopathies.
What conditions do we treat with Shockwave Therapy?
We have used shockwave therapy successfully for many years. We feel that for the best outcome with shockwave we should be already doing strength and rehab and are managing load on the effected tissue. If you are and the injury has been with you for longer than 4 months then shockwave is proven to be very useful. We treat a number of lower limb condition with shockwave but the most common are:

This is an injury that affects the tissue that attaches to the underside of your heel and connects to your toes.

How do I book in for Shockwave Therapy?
Medical appointments can be a little scary sometimes so we do everything we can to put your mind at rest. Here we explain what to expect during your appointment:

Assess
You can book a shockwave assessment, here we will discuss whether shockwave is the right option with you. If it is we will also go through a list questions and fill out a consent form for treatment.
Step 02.
Plan Appointments
With shockwave you will often be advised to book in for 4 treatments. These treatments need to be one week apart for 4 weeks.
Step 03.
Treatment
The treatment will be carried out at our Cardiff headquarters.
Step 04.
Check-Up
After the 4 sessions have been completed we will give you 6 weeks recovery and book you in for a catch-up to see progress.

Below we have answered some frequently asked questions we regularly get at our clinics prior to your appointment.
Does it hurt?
Shockwave can be uncomfortable but your podiatrist will make every effort to make you as comfortable as possible.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Depending on where we are applying shockwave it might vary. For heel pain, trousers or shorts, for knees shorts would be needed.
Am I allowed to exercise after treatment?
We advise that no high-impact exercises are undertaken for at least 24 hours after treatment.
Why do I have to have 4 treatments?
Evidence and experience has taught us that the most effective use of shockwave is 4 treatments over a 4 week period.
